A Baker’s cyst, or popliteal cyst, is a fluid-filled sac that forms behind the knee due to excess synovial fluid. It’s often caused by conditions like arthritis or knee injuries. Symptoms include swelling, pain, stiffness, and in some cases, a cyst can burst, leading to fluid leakage in the calf.

Physical Therapist’s Role:

1. Pain & Swelling Management: Ice therapy and lymph drainage

2. Exercises: Gentle range-of-motion and strengthening exercises for muscles around the knee improve flexibility and stability.

3. Manual Therapy: Techniques like joint mobilization or soft tissue release relieve pain and improve mobility.

4. Gait Training: Correcting walking patterns helps reduce stress on the knee.

5. Education & Activity Modification: Guidance on avoiding activities that aggravate the condition.

Physical therapy is key to relieving symptoms, improving knee function, and preventing recurrence, often avoiding the need for surgery.
