Our neurological approach utilizes a one-on-one philosophy to customize a rehabilitation program and maximize results. We also offer specialized programs like LSVT BIG and Rock Steady Boxing for enhanced treatment options. Common conditions we treat include multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, polyneuropathy, and stroke (CVA).
Comprehensive Neurological Care
Neurological rehabilitation focuses on helping individuals improve movement following a neurological injury or disorder. Physical therapy helps you achieve a higher level of function and independence. Neurological injuries and disorders include a variety of problems that can be caused by injuries, infections, age-related degeneration, anatomical anomalies, and tumors.
Physical therapy is essential for patients who have a neurological disease or injury. The brain and spinal cord control movement and sensation, but injuries to the brain and spinal cord can cause these cells to die. Without physical therapy, this can result in the loss of movement and function. Following an injury, there is a period of time when healthy cells in the brain and spinal cord can learn to control the functions that have been affected. Neurological rehabilitation helps prevent the loss of function during this time by teaching patients how to move.
Specialized Programs
LSVT BIG
We offer LSVT BIG (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment – BIG), an evidence-based physical therapy program specifically designed for people with Parkinson’s disease and other neurological conditions. This intensive, four-week program focuses on amplifying movement patterns through high-effort exercises to help patients move with more confidence and improved function.
Rock Steady Boxing
Our Rock Steady Boxing program is a non-contact, boxing-inspired fitness program created specifically for people living with Parkinson’s disease. This program combines boxing drills, functional strength training, balance exercises, and social support to help participants fight back against their symptoms while building strength, coordination, and confidence.
Conditions We Treat
Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. Multiple sclerosis occurs when the myelin sheath, the protective covering that coats nerve cells, is damaged and consequently slows or stops nerve impulses. Remission is possible, but the disease can also progress and continue to worsen without remission.
Symptoms:
- Loss of balance
- Muscle spasms
- Problems moving arms and legs
- Weakness
- Double vision
- Vision loss
- Tingling, crawling, or burning feeling in the arms and legs
- Slurred speech
Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s disease occurs when nerve cells in the brain that create dopamine, a chemical that sends signals to the part of the brain that controls movement, start to break down. Dopamine helps muscles move smoothly when you want them to. Without it, movement becomes increasingly difficult.
Symptoms:
- Tremor in the hands, arms, legs, or head
- Stiff muscles
- Slow movement
- Problems with balance or walking
Stroke (CVA)
Stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or bursts. Without oxygenated blood reaching the brain, the tissue starts to die. The part of the body controlled by the affected area of the brain becomes damaged and stops working properly.
Symptoms:
- Sudden numbness, paralysis, or weakness in your face, arm, or leg, especially on only one side of your body
- Problems with walking or balance
- Sudden changes in vision
- Drooling or slurred speech
- Problems speaking or understanding simple statements
- A sudden, severe headache
